Have you ever wondered what kind of books middle schoolers really like to read? How about what happens in the library?
Mrs. Huffstuttler, the school librarian, states that most of the time she sees kids come to the library to get IDs, which can be hectic. But when students do check books out, she says that kids seem to check out graphic novel type books the most. The librarian, Mrs. Huffstuttler, thinks that the kids who enjoy reading in their free time are the same kids who check out books. As someone who works at the school, she would like to see kids read more books that feature diversity, and she wants kids to see the world outside of their own. Mrs. Huffstuttler would also enjoy people reading books teaching them about tolerance and empathy. She also wishes students would check out more nonfiction books. She has observed that kids don’t like to check out sci fi and nonfiction books as much as other genres.
In her opinion, construction affects people coming in to check out books. She hopes kids visit. She stated, “I definitely do think it will affect it a bunch. This year has been kind of weird because of construction, but I’m hoping that changes.”
Some authors our own librarian here has recommended are Justin Reynolds and Kwame Alexander. Along with the new books in the library students should check them out. As middle schoolers pick out books for projects in ELA classes, the biggest choice is shown to be a book of interest, instead of one more for academics. “I love to help kids find stories”, Mrs. Huffstuttler says, so go give her a visit and check out your favorite genre!
