Have you ever wanted to try acting but don’t know where to go? Try Act 1!
You may be asking, “What is Act 1?” Act 1 is our school’s drama club, where students perform plays and musicals. We recently had a play, The Day the Internet Died. It’s a comedy about a town going through an absolutely tragic internet outage!
Here are a couple of reasons why we think you should join Act 1! When you join, you meet new people and make plenty of new friends. As an actor, you can have fun playing pretend and meeting new people! And for the tech crew, you can have fun with your imagination by helping with hair/makeup, costumes, props, stage design, or assisting in the tech booth and enjoying teamwork. Whether you are an actor on stage or part of the tech crew behind the scenes, both play very important roles (quite literally).
How Act 1 works can be complicated! Harrison Painter and Lucas Walker (Act 1 members) both agreed that in the beginning, the rehearsals are fun and playful. They include games and read-throughs to help you get more comfortable with your surroundings! Keep in mind that as the performance gets closer, both you and the rehearsals do have to get more serious to ensure that the performance is ready.
If you’re still wary about joining, we have some advice from the actors! “If you’re worried about auditioning, that’s okay. Just remember to do your best and hide behind your character. Most people laugh because of the lines the character is saying, not because of you.” And if you’ve already missed the play auditions, don’t wait to try out for the musical! If you still want to try out for the play, there’s always next year!
