Have you ever heard of Peer Buddies? Do you know why it’s important to join? It’s because students in the Castle program really enjoy Peer Buddies, and it helps them too! I asked Kingston what he likes about Peer Buddies, and he said, “I like playing with my friends.” He also said one of the best things is “learning how to make friends.” Kingston sometimes has trouble being social in the mornings, so his only dislike is that “it takes too long.”
Another student, James, had different answers when I asked him the same questions. James loves meeting new friends and playing with different people. When I asked how Peer Buddies helps him, he said, “I learn social skills.” His biggest dislike is when he misses Peer Buddies.
James really likes the Castle program because of the swing in the sensory room. He said, “It’s fun!” But one thing he doesn’t like is not eating with his friends and classmates. When I asked if he likes eating in the cafeteria, he said, “Yeah, but I wish I could eat during 7th grade lunch instead of 6th grade.”
The last person I interviewed was Mrs. Ross, the teacher in charge of Peer Buddies. Mrs. Ross loves the Castle program because, “I like that the students are able to learn and grow in a way that helps them reach their goals.” She also said, “It helps all students feel accepted and gives them a chance to interact with each other.” One challenge she mentioned is that the space for Peer Buddies is small, and it’s hard to fit everyone. Another issue is that it’s difficult to get started right after the students get off the bus.
When I asked Mrs. Ross if some students have more severe disabilities than others, she explained, “Yes, there are students with a wide range of abilities. Some need one-on-one support, and some can function more independently.” Mrs. Ross became a teacher because she grew up around students with different abilities and wanted to help them reach their full potential. We’re lucky to have her at Lincoln Middle School and even luckier that she’s part of the Castle and Peer Buddies programs.
If you’re not in Peer Buddies or something similar, I hope this gives you a reason to consider joining. It’s a wonderful experience!
