Are cell phones good, or bad? This week at Lincoln Middle School we interviewed our principal Mr. Cory, and a staff members daughter, Eighth Grader Anna Stark to find out if phones are good or bad during the school day.
Phones are very controversial topic. Most students think you should be able to have phones in school, but not all of them have good intentions. As Mr. Cory said, “I will say that last spring cell phones seemed to be an issue including other electronics like earbuds and apple watches.” Theses issues ranged from students having them in their pockets, looking at them when the teacher isn’t watching, texting on their watches to ignoring teacher directions and listening to music in their air pods.
But there were some reasons students needed to have their phone on you. Eighth grader Anna Stark says, “Well, I want to have my phone linked with me in case emergency. So, if there’s a school shooting, I don’t have to be huddled in a corner waiting until after so I can call my parents on the school phone.”
Mr. Cory had a different perspective, “I tell the parents what I tell the students, our number one priority here is student safety. If there’s ever an emergency from home, or at school we will do everything we can.” Mr. Cory believes that cell phones are a big distraction and affect our learning.
It is expected that they each have different opinions because one is an administrator and the other is a student. According to research kids ages 8-12 have an average screen time of 4 hours and 44 minutes daily. School takes 8 hours of the day and with the phone rule, it helps prevent them from being on it that much. Now, a question I ask you. Are cell phones a good thing, or a bad thing?
