Since it’s the end of the school year I wanted to take another look at our school’s construction. I interviewed Assistant Principal Duncan, and she gave us very detailed answers toward the construction.
Construction at Lincoln is expected to last about 2 more years according to AP Duncan. When asked what the main purpose of the construction is she explained that it is because our building is very old and “not in the best condition”. AP Duncan also added that “we are adding on, we are making it larger, and we are improving the structure of it.” Fun Fact: did you know that our building is from 1925? That means as of this year this building is 100 years old.
When I asked AP Duncan what kind of new facilities students and staff should expect in the new building, she explained that we should be getting a new gym and a new cafeteria. Also, there will be additions like a STEM room, video production room and even a courtyard.
Next, I started leaning into how things will be next school year, I asked AP Duncan what has been the biggest challenge during the construction process so far and she explained that “this year, it’s where we’re putting everybody because even though we’re an active construction site, we are also an active school, so we have to find a balance between construction and how to keep the integrity of our education at where it needs to be.”
Next, I asked AP Duncan what measures are being taken to minimize distractions during the school day, and she replied with “Next year, everything will be sealed off as well and we’re moving classrooms around so that the kids and the construction workers never are in the same area.”
AP Duncan did confirm that the entire school district would be opening a week later next year but, breaks like spring break and so on will be cut shorter to make up for those lost days. She also confirmed that the school district opening a week later is just for next year and not a permanent change.
Finally, I decided to get an opinion from someone who has seen a video of the building so, I asked 8th grader Brooklynn Davis who helped tour the incoming 6th graders for her opinion on how the building looks so far. When I asked her what’s her opinion of the building so far she replied with “I think it looks nice but its going to be a real adjustment for the 7th graders next year” When I asked her to share her favorite part of the new extinction of the school so far, she said that is has to be the Learning stairs which are bigger stairs made for learning.
Everyone at Lincoln is excited to see our building when it’s done.
