Homework is something almost every student has to deal with during school. While homework can help students practice what they learned in class, many students think it takes away too much free time. In a survey of 108 students, 40% said homework stresses them out, while 44% said it stresses them out sometimes. After a long school day, most kids want to relax, spend time with friends, or do activities they enjoy instead of more schoolwork.
One reason students dislike homework is because it causes stress. Sometimes teachers give too much homework at once, and students feel overwhelmed trying to finish everything on time. Homework can also take away free time, especially for students who play sports or have after-school activities. In the survey, about 80% of students said they have an after-school activity, and many said they sometimes do not finish homework because they get home late. Serenity says, “whenever I get home I don’t want to worry about homework, I just want to go home and relax.”
Even though homework can be frustrating, it does have some benefits. Homework helps students understand the material better by giving them extra practice. It can also prepare students for quizzes and tests because they review what they learned in class. Even though 88% of students said they do not like weekly homework like IXL, homework may still help students improve their grades and get ready for harder classes in high school. Lucas says, “like the idea of homework because it can help me understand the material better.”
In the end, homework is something that most students dislike, but it is not always a bad thing. While too much homework can be stressful and tiring, the right amount can help students learn and succeed in school. The next time you get homework, it might help to remember that it could make your next test a little easier.
